Whimsical Women

Hi everyone! What can I tell you about me that you don't already know? I'm a mom. I'm a snarky wordsmith. I'm a shoe h00r and a twitter addict. I raise my eyebrow in disbelief a lot. I mock constantly. I would sell my kidneys to have half of the talent in Neil Gaiman's pinky. Pitch me a story with some sort of space exploration and I'm totally there. I'm another one of those gals who says "Twilight inspired me to write!" And as cliche as that sounds, it's totally true. I started writing in the wonderful and educational world of fanfiction and am currently working on my first YA manuscript. If I ever get published (ha!) you can all say "I knew her when..." ;) Twilight also introduced me to a giant community with some hysterical women, one of whom I'm now blogging with. *waves at Stacie*

*waves over at Leigh* Okay, so I am a self-confessed book whore. I will read pretty much anything, and if I really like something, I will read it more than once. I've read almost every genre, but I'm currently addicted to YA fiction. I mainly enjoy books that have an element of the supernatural - you know, vampires, werewolves, shadowhunters - that type of thing. Aside from reading, I'm a mom who regularly needs drinks wine, a wife who can't cook or clean very well, and sometimes I try to get crafty.

You all should know, I don't do Book Reviews, I do Recommendations. Mainly because I am soft-hearted and hate to say something bad about a book. So, if you see a book recommended here, it's because I loved it (or Leigh loved it - she does recs too). Oh, and also? I really suck at titles. I think everyone should know this because it's true. I hate them.

  2. Stacie and Leigh,

I apologize if this isn't the right place to ask, but I wasn't sure what your review policy is, so I thought I'd post my query here.

I'm writing to ask if a book I've just published would be the sort you'd be willing to review on your site; it's pitched at a YA audience---fans of the Harry Potter series---but it's non-fiction, so I thought it would be best to ask first.

My book is "Harry Potter and History"; it's just been published by a major trade press, and it's part of a series on history and popular culture that is aimed at a teen audience (teens and up---anyone who wants to know more about the history in supernatural or fantasy worlds). Our first volume was "Twilight and History," in fact (which I can see you're also fans of).

My new book looks at the real history that Rowling's wizarding world is built on----how the wizarding world uses lots of objects and people from real history, and the historical parallels for things we see in Harry's world. The book was written by a group of historians who are also die-hard Harry Potter fans, and we think it would be a fun read for anyone who's a Potter fan and wants to know more about the wizarding world.

If you'd like to know more about the book, you could check out its Amazon page here: http://www.amazon.com/Harry-Potter-History-Wiley-Culture/dp/0470574720/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1305498376&sr=1-2

If you think this would be a suitable book to review on Whimsical Fic-ery, I'd be happy to have the publisher send you a complimentary review copy. Just let me know, and thanks for considering my request!

re: book review request by award-winning author

    Dear Leigh and Rain,

I'm an award-winning author with a new book out this fall. Ugly To Start With is a series of thirteen interrelated stories about childhood published by West Virginia University Press.

Can I interest you in reviewing it?

If you write me back at johnmcummings@aol.com, I can email you a PDF of my book. If you require a bound copy, please ask, and I will forward your reply to my publisher. Or you can write directly to Abby Freeland at:

    Abby.Freeland@mail.wvu.edu

My publisher, I should add, can also offer your readers a free excerpt of my book through a link from your blog to my publisher's website:

Here’s what Jacob Appel, celebrated author of
Dyads and The Vermin Episode, says about my new collection: "In Ugly to Start With, set in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Cummings tackles the challenges of boyhood adventure and family conflict in a taut, crystalline style that captures the triumphs and tribulations of small-town life. He has a gift for transcending the particular experiences to his characters to capture the universal truths of human affection and suffering--emotional truths that the members of his audience will recognize from their own experiences of childhood and adolescence.”

My short stories have appeared in more than seventy-five literary journals, including North American Review, The Kenyon Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Chattahoochee Review. Twice I have been nominated for The Pushcart Prize. My short story "The Scratchboard Project" received an honorable mention in The Best American Short Stories 2007.

I am also the author of the nationally acclaimed coming-of-age novel The Night I Freed John Brown (Philomel Books, Penguin Group, 2009), winner of The Paterson Prize for Books for Young Readers (Grades 7-12) and one of ten books recommended by USA TODAY.
